Stiller: Actors, Not Disabled, are Targets...
U.S. actor-director Ben Stiller says "Tropic Thunder" skewers actors
who play disabled people in pursuit of Oscar glory; it doesn't poke fun
of the disabled.
The comedy about a group of actors -- which was directed and
co-written by Stiller -- has come under fire for what some feel is its
insensitive portrayal of the intellectually disabled.
Stiller plays an actor who portrays a character called Simple Jack
in a fictional film frequently referred to within "Thunder." The word
"retard" reportedly is used numerous times in relation to Stiller's
character's previous portrayal of the Jack character.

Lively: I Love Shooting 'Gossip' in NYC...
Actress Blake Lively says one of her favorite things about her TV series "Gossip Girl" is that it is shot in New York City.
"Just shooting in the city is such a wonderful (thing,)" she told reporters in Manhattan recently.
"Getting up so early in the morning, sometimes I think, 'Why am
I doing a job that wakes you up at 3:30 in the morning?' But just
getting to shoot on these beautiful cobblestone streets with the trees
and it's just ... It's a magical place and it's a character in and of
itself," she said. "It's so important. I don't think our show would
work if it wasn't in New York. You know, some of my favorite movies are
based here in New York. I just can't describe what I love about this
city ... It makes me warm and fuzzy. And Silver Cup Studios and Long
Island Studio are both really great."
Soul Star Hayes Died of Stroke...
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Isaac Hayes, the deep-voiced soul music star who
won an Oscar for writing the theme song to the movie "Shaft," died over
the weekend from a stroke related to high blood pressure, Memphis
authorities said on Tuesday.
Hayes, 65, who once described himself as a "health fanatic,"
was being treated for high blood pressure and had suffered a non-fatal
stroke last year.
His body was found next to a running treadmill on Sunday in his
Memphis home, and there was no indication he had hit his head or
suffered any trauma, according to the Shelby County Medical Examiner,
Dr. David Kraus, who concluded Hayes died from a stroke.
"The Hayes family is comfortable with Dr. Kraus' recommendation
to not conduct an autopsy," said a statement from the Shelby County
Sheriff, in Memphis.
Hayes, who was born in Tennessee, wrote for a stable of stars
at Memphis soul label Stax Records during the 1960s, emerging as a
performer in his own right with the album "Hot Buttered Soul." He was
the first black composer to win an Oscar, for the 1971 hit "Theme from
'Shaft.'"
