Last night on Monday night football, a new Halo 3 advertisement was aired on TV. After downloading it and watching it on the Xbox Live Marketplace, I felt it left a lot of questions to be answered.
The 60 second video begins with two small children, a boy and a girl who are around the age of 5-8, lying down; staring at the stars under a night sky. They seem very relaxed and wondering if anyone is watching the Planet; wondering if there is life on Earth. It appears to be set well before the Halo Universe, as Humans already live on numerous planets. The girl then says “will we ever meet them?”
“I hope so.” The boy replies. The camera then focuses back on the girl’s position, and a clear change occurs. The girl’s body is replaced by a helmet, Master Chiefs’ helmet. A scream is met with a completely different change of scene: it is as white as day, and there is little or no grass anywhere. Still there is no face though, as the Chief’s hands claw back at his helmet while explosions, laser beams and an overturned Warthog are seen in the background, all viewed in the first person. In shellshock, he surveys his surroundings now in third person. With echoes of Cortona and soldiers fearing they’ve lost the chief, he eyes an assault gun, cue a new feature: he puts the gun on his back for all to see. “I think we lost him” a soldier says.
“Not yet.” Chief says (an iconic stance and tone of voice are evident).
Now another new feature: He pulls from his side a small, grenade like ball. He thrusts it toward the ground as a mortar blast comes directly for him. A shield emerges around him, protecting him from the blast. As usual, there is no comment from Bungie yet. Running from the now dissolved shield, he races to a cliff face, getting ready for battle. He jumps off, into a storm of what are believed to be brutes, and the sequence ends.
So who are them kids?
So far the rumor mill has spewed up the kids as being John aka Spartan 117 or Master Chief and Kelly, teamates from a place called Reach, where they were being trained to become Spartans. This theory originated from the book that has been released recently.
What is that Shield Grenade?
No official comment yet on the subject
Why is he only fighting Brutes?
The end of the second game sees the Elites siding with the Humans in order to defeat the Brutes, who have taken over as the Covenant Councils Holy Guard.
Overall it is a very nice and well thought out trailer, which bear in mind, is supposed to be artistic and not gameplay. It is sure to get the mind buzzing and get gamers revved up for release, when ever that is? Possibly November, 7 2007? (Bungie love the number 7)
